
Cultural Relativism.
You do not advance on the path toward excellence by embracing the proposition that nothing is better than anything else. It is impossible in principle. This is not a claim of cultural supremacy, it is a statement of the supremacy of the individual.
The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself.
What follows dissects that logic. It has unfolded faster than foreseen. Its sentiments’ spiraling volume and intensity have eliminated any possibility of “stepping back.”
Our uncertainty might make us humbler … if we let it.
The world is more complex than we can imagine, and every new point of view we encounter can enrich our understanding even if we don’t embrace it entirely. But this comes with the risk of self-effacement and growing uncertainty.
If people want to pass on their ideas on to the next generation, they should focus on building up logic, not just giving them the right texts to read and TV shows to watch. The goal should be to understand the reasons, not follow the signals of the right tribe.
I believe these things, but what do I really know? Very little, I’m willing to admit. There are simply too many variables, too many unknowns. What I can’t have is certainty. So perhaps I — we — should calm down a bit.
The battle for the world is the battle for definitions.
