I like the idea of meritocracy as much as my father hated it | The Spectator
In my speech I explained that I liked meritocracy for much the same
reason. I regard inequality as an inevitable by-product of limited
government, which history teaches us is preferable to excessive state
power. In common with many utopian socialists, my father believed the
state would just ‘wither away’ once it had overseen a massive
redistribution of wealth and power, but I’ve always been sceptical. Such
optimism is contingent on a conception of human nature that is belied
by science, particularly evolutionary psychology: that man is a
peace-loving, altruistic creature who can be depended upon not to engage
in predation, cruelty, warfare, sexual enslavement and homicidal
violence once the workers’ paradise has been created.
Both books make the point that it isn’t just lack of opportunities that
have alienated the poorly educated in Britain and the US. It’s also the
elite’s callous disregard for their anxieties about the erosion of
their communities. When the white working-class — and non-whites, too —
express their concerns about mass immigration, they’re dismissed as
‘-racist’ and ‘xenophobic’.

Can Harsh Words Lead to Violent Deeds?
Trump and His Supporters Are Destroying the Democrats’ Ability to Enforce Double Standards
Alinsky’s fourth rule for radicals
is “make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” The flip side of
that, of course, is that the radicals don’t have to live up to any rules
at all. This way you can constantly keep the other side on the
defensive. That’s why you see progressive leftists in politics, in the news
media, or in academia pull this amazing trick over and over, constantly
forcing their political opponents to live up to cultural and social and
legal rules that they themselves ignore. It took Trump to show the GOP
and conservatives how to turn this tactic back on people who make
constant use of it.“We can say this kind of stuff, but you people can’t!” only
works if you are the sort of person who the usual politically correct
browbeating can force into submission. Leftists have spent the past
three years slowly ramping up this tactic against Trump, and failing
miserably with it because Trump simply refuses to respond as he is
supposed to. The president refuses to be browbeaten into
anything, especially by the “fake news media.”Instead of apologizing, retreating, or being defensive, Trump
constantly goes on the attack, turning the tables on his accusers. And
it’s not just Trump. Plenty of Americans are waking up to the fact that
they can challenge these entrenched double standards and force the left
to do the retreating.

Why Did Rome Fall—And Why Does It Matter Now?
The strange thing is that these wild swings in civilization are at their
bases psychological: decline is one of choice rather than necessity.
Plague or lead poisoning or famine did not destroy Rome. We could
balance our budget tomorrow without a great deal of sacrifice; we could
eliminate 10% worth of government spending that is not essential; we
could create our own energy with massive nuclear power investment, and
more extraction of gas, oil, and coal. We could instill a tragic rather
than therapeutic world view that would mean more responsibilities rather
than endlessly more rights. We could do this all right — but too many
feel such medicine is worse than the malady, and so we probably won’t
and can’t. An enjoyable slow decline is apparently preferable to a
short, but painful rethinking and rebirth.

Progress Down a Slope
Here
are some questions for America’s bashers. What would happen if, as
once common, people could manage with fewer lawyers, advocates, drugs,
and therapists? Could they live with safe schools and neighborhoods,
entertainment free of sex and “politically correct” warp? What would
happen if more people worked at useful jobs? Could there be a problem
with schools, churches, and media not pushing Marxist propaganda? What
would Americans do with an America-loving president? Could they bear up to all such oppression? The
connection between today’s rampant disorder and leftist machinations
against American society should be plain to all who really care about
America. Unfortunately, it’s hard for many to see what has been going
on without their knowledge; brainwash is difficult to detect. You could
read the papers, watch the news, listen to lectures, sermons,
speeches, and not know that you were being brainwashed. Being
“reformed” while being “informed” or “entertained” is, for most, harder
to detect than the smell of gas leaking into a room. It is why so many
in the mainstream are clueless about what has happened to them and to
our country. It is why so many continually cast votes that
incrementally dismantle their own society while honestly believing they
are doing the right thing.
The acquisition of this knowledge predisposed Obama to the recognition that society does not necessarily require government ownership of the means of production to implement the egalitarian dream. As long as the government controls the economy and is able to replace the free-market capitalist economy with political economy, and subsequently control profits, the objectives of socialism can be achieved.
