As people sensing we live in the winter of western culture, it can be discouraging. After all, what’s the point of trying to preserve anything, if it is already dead? Why engage in political fights, if the outcome, in a larger sense, has been decided? It’s important to remember that the world does not end when an important man dies. The world may go off in a different direction than if he had lived, but it goes on nonetheless. Cultures come into being, grow and thrive, then decline and die. That is the cycle of history, the cycle of life.

Two years of crazy in the House

All they care about is power. Lord Acton said power corrupts. Imagine
now what happens when you give power to the already corrupted.

Reynolds wrote, “For Trump, at least, there are some upsides to a
Democratic-controlled House. If, as expected, the leadership consists of
people like Nancy Pelosi, Jerrold Nadler, Adam Schiff and Maxine
Waters, Trump will have a useful array of foils. He’ll have to balance
his desire to use them as convenient enemies in the run-up to 2020 and
his need to work with them to produce some sort of legislative
achievement.”

Again, that is not happening. This is not a parlor game among good
sports. Democrats selected Pelosi, Nadler, Schiff, and Waters as leaders
because they are ruthless. They do not seek compromise. They do not
want to work with President Trump or any Republican.

Under Obama, when they controlled Congress, they refused to work with
Republicans on health care or the stimulus. They did not seek
compromise.

A few thoughts about the Democrat-majority House – Bookworm Room

2. Trump can continue to dismantled the regulatory state, which is huge.

3. Trump still has a free hand with foreign policy and I like his approach to foreign policy.

5. What’s going to come out of the House in the upcoming years will be, literally, insane. Sarah Hoyt is very worried that Trump, who is committed to deal-making, will cave or, to use a Bill Clintonesque term from 1994, “triangulate”:

7. I’m reminding myself not to feel stressed. The die is cast. All I can
do now, from my powerless position at my computer, is watch events play
out. My hope is that the Democrats repulse America with their unleashed
insanity and that Trump continues to be a masterful strategist and
persuader. If things go sour for all of America, I’ll have to deal with
that outcome’s effect on me and my family. But I can’t let the stress
take hold now, when nothing has happened yet and the show is just about
to begin.
